Spaniel in Emerald Green Interior Square Painting After Matisse
This small square painting features a lovely liver-and-white colored English Springer Spaniel in a dreamy emerald green living room. The walls are paneled and painted in this deep green, the color of forests and jewels and my favorite swimming hole on the Green River in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The long, curving, sofa behind the dog is soft plush pink velvet and behind that is an ornate fireplace, the mantelpiece adorned with potted plants, a vase of red flowers, and a painting of a lion and a tiger that has featured in the background of other interior scenes. I have two delightful English springer spaniels who both serve as unwilling models. Despite this unwillingness, neither of them is pleased that the spaniel in this painting is liver-and-white while they are both black and white-- treason!
The piece is playfully painted in gorgeously colored gouache paint with intense jewel tones. Lively brush strokes are visible, offering the painting a sense of movement. It is painted on a birch panel, with a deep cradle showing birch sides.
