Slowed down art-making examples and adventures are below!

  • Napping Cat Sketch

This little gif animates the creation of a sketch I made before I created one of my cat paintings. I like to choose the color of the central creature around the rest of the piece— in this case, a pink and green jungle!

  • The creation of a journal cover (Margaret Atwood Studies 2023)

  • Sketching in the Gardens at the Huntington

This was my first iPad doodle, back in 2018. I spent the afternoon sketching outside but failed to properly use layers :D

ABOUT
LARA

Hi! I am a South African and American painter currently based in rather wonderful Oakland, California. My paintings are mostly Hockney/Matisse-inspired fauvist wonderlands. I am obsessed with color and pattern. I love to paint flowers and strange little animals and celebratory meals. Making art out of notable moments makes me happy!

A giant nerd, I am currently working towards my PhD in English, focused on poetry, at Berkeley. I also have two English Springer Spaniels and the most delightful tuxedo cat on earth. Their names are Edith, Hugo, and Beatrice. You will see them in my work fairly frequently!

I created this site so that people could buy my work directly from me, and so that I could share (and sell!) my more experimental projects. I hope it brings you joy, or at least art!
